Goodbye :(

On Saturday....Erica, Elijah, Sadie and I will be leaving Alvin. We are going to really, really miss everyone here. It has been such a rich blessing to us that all of you were in our life.


When I was growing up in Rosebud, I attended a church that was very small. It averaged 25-30 people on Sunday, and that was on a good day. So I never got to experience a youth group. I, along with my brother and sister, went to other area churches for summer series and that really was it. I then went to Abilene and got involved in a college ministry, and got close to some, but not like here in Alvin. Since I never had a youth group or a youth minister in high school.......I had a void in my life that I believe I needed. I needed it to have a close connection with the people in Alvin. And in Alvin, I received that. You all were my youth minister. I learned so much from all of you. All of you were awesome!! Whoever takes over this position, will be very fortunate. Because he gets to know a great group of teens and parents who are committed to God and love to have a good time together.




So I am sad.........


because I will truly miss all of you.



But I am also glad.........


because you left a mark in my life that will never be replaced. You have made my life better. You have been my teacher over the past 4 years. Thank you!!

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21

About three days ago, I had to go to a store and buy some stuff. In paying for the items the cashier pulls out a yellow looking marker and puts a mark across the cash I gave her. I asked her if she had ever been given money that was counterfeit. She replied yes.....all the time. She said the worst case she has seen was a woman who came in with $400.00 worth in 5 dollar bills. So she marked one and it turned a purple looking color. She marked the next one and it also turned purple. So she said that she called her manager over to her register and they found out that every one of her $5 bills were fake....counterfeit. They asked the woman if she knew that these bills were fake and she denied it at first, but later confessed that her husband makes counterfiet money for a job. FOR A JOB!! His profession is surrounded by making something that is FALSE!! A LIE!! It's counterfeit.

When Jesus was talking with the woman at the well in John 4, he makes this statement in verse 23, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."

I italicized the word true above because that word in the Greek language is opposite of counterfeit. In fact the actual meaning is "in every respect corresponding to the idea of being real and genuine." So when Jesus said that God is seeking true worshipers, He is seeking people who worship with 100%.......not holding back anything. Worship in spirit and in truth!

I have made this statement before, but I think sometimes it doesn't sink in enough........this is what we all are guilty of doing.... for example, "I'll fly away, oh glory I'll fly away (in the morning). When I die.........Oh I wonder what I'm gonna do after worship? Or can you believe she said that to me earlier? Or do we have to sing this song, we sing this all the time.
I also wonder if we live our life as a lie. What I mean is we act like a Christian. We wear tshirts that say we are.....we even listen to Christian music......we even go to Sunday worship, but in our hearts and our minds we know that our faith is fake. You can make the decision to be genuine.....100% authentic. Be a true worshiper!!
When we worship in spirit and in truth.......God is seeking us. But you can't be fake or counterfeit. And that is FO RIZZLE!!

Take My Son

Good story I found not too long ago:

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso, Van Gogh, to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the works of art together. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and deeply grieved for his son.

About a month later just before Christmas there was a knock at the father's door. A young man stood in the doorway with a package in his hands. He said, "Sir you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life......he saved many lives that day. He was carrying me over his shoulder when a bullet struck his chest and died. He often talked about you and your love for art." The young man held out the package. "I know this is not much, and I am not a great artist, but I though your son would have wanted you to have this."

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at how the portrait captured the characteristics of his son. The father was drawn to the eyes so much that his eyes began to tear up. He thanked the young man and offered to pay. The young man refused and said, "You could never repay me for what your son did. It is a gift!"

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Everytime visitors came to his home he always made sure to take them to see this painting before any of the other works of art he had collected.

The father died a few months later. There was to be an auction of all the famous paintings. Many influential people gathered and were excited to see the paintings and waited for the opportunity to bid on these paintings.

On the platform first was the painting of the son. The auctioneer began the bidding. "Who will bid on this picture of the man's son?" The auctioneer told the battle story of the painting and who gave it to the man. There was total silence. Not one bid. Someone in the back shouted, "Bring out the Remembrants or Monets. We don't want to see this picture! We don't care about this man's son." But the auctioneer persisted and asked for $200, then lowered to $100. No one would bid on the painting. The crowd grew angry and yelled, "We did not come to see this painting! Get on with the real bids!" The auctioneer said, "Who will take this painting?"

A voice in the back came from a homeless man, "All I have is $4.00. Will you take that?" The auctioneer exclaimed, "$4.00, who will go $5.00? Anyone?"

"Give it to him for $4.00. Get on with the real auction!" The people were beginning to shout for they did not want to see the picture of the son. They wanted the pictures that would be an investment to their collections. The auctioneer pounded his gavel and said, "Going once, going twice, sold for $4.00." A man in front shouted, "Good, now let's see the masters." The auctioneer laid down his gavel and said, "I'm sorry, the auction is now closed."

"What about the paintings?" the crowd said. "I am sorry, when I was called to conduct this auction, I was told under strict stipulations to auction the painting of the son first. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought the painting of the son would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything."

Much like this story, the person who will take God's son will get everything. The son, the son, who will take the son? Will it be you?

WE ARE AT WAR!!!!!

I googled "pictures of World War II" yesterday. I got all kinds of pictures. There were pics of airplanes, tanks, Hitler, FDR, and nazi symbols. But the picture that caught my attention the most were ones like this :

It may actually be a little fuzzy, but this pic is of a bank building in Milan, Italy. All over Europe, Africa, and the Pacific battleships were sunk, soldiers died, airplanes and tanks were destroyed. This war took place over several years and involved primarily two opposing sides.

In the same way, this is what is happening to our souls. Destruction is occurring when we let sinful desires rule our hearts. Listen to the words of Peter: "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul." (1 Peter 2:11)

WE ARE AT WAR!! I am not sure if you know it or not, but your soul is a battlefield. Your soul is just like the beaches of Normandy (D-Day) or the bunkers of Iwo Jima. Satan desires to win your soul. So he uses every weapon (fame, money, girls, etc) to win. And sometimes he wins a battle. That battle takes place in your heart.

We all are at war whether we accept it or not. A great thing is that we are at war together and with a Commander who has an awesome stategy. Comment on where you are in this war and we'll strive to help and encourage each other.

Squirm

Over the past 4 weeks, I have noticed something in our new girl. Whenever I hold her, at first she squirms.......a lot. I speak to her and hold her in my arms and eventually she settles down. But she does not do this at all with Erica. At an instant Erica will hold her and she is calm. It's because she is more comfortable with Erica. Sadie has spent countless hours with Erica (a good number of them at 2 am)! Sadie is familiar with her smell, sound of her voice, etc. She squirms in my arms because she is not familiar with me. You know where I am going with this, right?

I wonder how many times we squirm to get out of God's arms or out of His presence because it is just uncomfortable? When He speaks to us we do not recognize His voice (John 10:4). When we come into His presence we talk to others, think more about the hot guy/girl next to us or in our math class, find ways to go to the bathroom, etc. It is all because we are not comfortable with being in His arms. And the only way for us to get comfortable is for us to spend time to get to know Him. Think about it this way. How do you get to know your family? You sit around the dinner table with your family. You go to the grocery store and help you parents go shopping. You go on vacation with your family. Should I continue more with some examples? When we know God we will want to be with Him because of who He is.

Stillness


Could you be in the same room with a person for a while and not say anything? How about when you are in an elevator going up several floors? Do you feel like you need to say something?

Would you feel like you need to call someone or go somewhere if you were home alone for a whole weekend? I write all of this because I have felt all of those things. David writes in Psalm 37:7, "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently on Him". How many times, when we are spending time with God we feel as though we have to say something or do something? Other versions read that we need to "rest" in the Lord. Most of the time when want some QT with God we think of the spiritual disciplines (pray, read, service, fasting, etc). But what about listening and being still before God?

Ecclesiates 5:2 says :

Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.

I want to give you a challenge this week. When you take time during your day to study the Bible, pray, serve, or anything to praise God, match the time with being still before God or rest before Him and let your words be few.

Family Portrait

Not very long ago Erica, Elijah and I went to get pictures at a photography studio. Erica wanted to get some pics while she was still pregnant. So me being the good husband I am, I agreed. And everything went well. They were actually nice looking pictures. But we all have had to take family pictures, right. You want to wear something nice, maybe even all matching. And you do this for memories later in life.

Well at the photo studio, they had one picture on the wall where all of it was taken up with family members. I mean from the great-grandmother (I think) to the youngest newborn baby sitting on a mother's lap. This was a huge family. And I looked at the picture and tried to guess who was who. Who looked like sons or daughters of the great grandmother. I did this for probably ten minutes or so. (Yes I know I get amused by things very easily!!) But I could not do it. I would look and look and get confused. There were so many people in this family.

What if we took a family portrait of the church? What about at Westside? What about in Texas? What about the U.S.? What about......you know next right, the world? What about all the people living and already dead who are in the church?

Wow!! That would be alot of people! That would be one giant family portrait. And we all have something in common. We all are covered by the blood of Christ. What a wonderful similarity! Take time as you go throughout your week to be thankful that we have a family whose numbers are "as many as the stars." And we have a Father who is Head.

Caterpillars, Nails, and Cheetohs

Do you know where caterpillars come from? If you know the process of metaphorphosis you probably can describe where a butterfly, pupa, and caterpillar come from. But what about nails? Where do they come from? Or what about cheetohs? If you have ever watched the show How Its Made you may have seen them making cheetohs. It's awesome!

If you answered God your right. God is the source of all those things on the left and right. He is the source of all things. Listen to what James 1:17 says. "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows."
God is the source of everything that is good - not just good things, like roses, kittens, bubbles and Whataburger. He is the source of kindness, respect, love, and courage. "Good" comes from God because he is good. "Right" comes from Him because He is "righteous". Everything about you comes from God. You are His. You are good because you are a gift from God.

Dogpile

How many times have you been dogpiled? Or better yet how many times have you been the beginning of a dogpile on someone else? And I am not talking about the picture to the left, I mean a human dogpile. Do you even remember what it feels like to be under that much weight at the bottom or even close to the bottom? You have so many people on top of you that you can barely breath or feeling that your head is about to pop from all the blood rushing to your head?

Have you ever been dogpiled with all the weight of this world? You felt as if your under so much pressure that if one more thing would happen then you would lose your mind? Jesus felt this way when he was in Gethsemane. In Matthew 26:38, Jesus says to Peter, James and John, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death." Can you imagine how exhausted and horrible he felt as he is saying this? He said he is feeling so much sorrow to the "point of death". I have had some bad days and weeks, maybe even months, but not so bad where I have said that the sorrow is overwhelming me so much to the point of death. Jesus was dogpiled way beyond our understanding. He was dogpiled by the sin that people commit. All the pressure was from you and me being selfish in our own little world. This was so much pressure on Jesus that he says twice, "Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me." Jesus being human wanted all that pressure relieved. He wanted all the sins off his shoulders.


But Jesus says to His Father right after this, "Yet not as I will, but as you will." Jesus knew that there was no other way for us to have a relationship with His Father, than for Him to bear the sins of the world and be dogpiled. Thanks to Jesus that we have Him who willingly laid himself down at the bottom of the dogpile.


Next time you are joking around with your friends and trying to dogpile each other, stop afterward and take a little time and remember who took on the ultimate dogpile.

North bound I-45

I have a story to tell. I was travelling on I 45 just outside of Dickinson, listening to my radio, enjoying the highway scenery (yeah right!), when all of a sudden my truck engine quits. Yes I mean on I-45 travelling in interstate traffic. The traffic is not bad at all. I am going 65 or 70 mph when the engine quits and I just coast. Can't do a thing to my truck except to make my way to an exit and slowly.....yes very slowly coast to the side of the road on I-45 access road. I stop and try to figure what going on, but can't find anything wrong. I move my battery cables around......everything I knew to do I did, and nothing worked.

So there I am sitting on the access road of I-45.....windows rolled down......nice smell of car exhaust rushing through my windows. I am loving this. I am trying to get home so I can eat a quick bite and go to 1055 (youth bible study), so as I am sitting there I decide to try the engine again.....IT STARTS!! Oh yeah back in business....but I stay on the access road with windows rolled down still going about 50 mph. And I get onto FM 517 and I am just hoping the engine will not die again. So I get about 7 miles outside town and it dies. Not in business anymore. But the road does not have a shoulder to pull over on, but it does have a turning lane. So I coast onto the middle turning lane and just sit there. I call Erica and tell her whats up. I let the host of 1055 know I won't make it tonight. I call for a wrecker to come and pick us up because I sit for 30 -45 minutes and still it does not start. No bueno! Wrecker comes and picks the truck up and takes it to a car shop in town. I let the car shop owner I brought it to his place. The truck is being worked on today. Mechanic said it was a gas line processor? Something like that? He said it is a computer chip in the gas line to the engine that tells the gas pump to do its job.

I bet most of you are thinking that I will come up with some way to make a point from this story, but I am not. I probably will later! That's it.

Great Faith

In Luke 7:1-10, Jesus is confronted by elders of the Jews who came from a centurion, who had heard of Jesus. The centurion probably heard of the miracles that been taking place. This was just after the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus spends time with the people on a mountainside teaching them with wonderful words from God. News travels fast. The centurion asks the elders of the Jews to go and plead with him to come and heal the servant, who is paralyzed (Matt 8:6). Jesus begins to travel to the centurion's house, but before he could enter it, some friends of the centurion tell Jesus to just say the words and heal him, there is no need to come to his house because the centurion does not believe himself to be worthy to have Jesus in his house.

After Jesus heard the words of the centurion from his friends, it says that Jesus was amazed at his "great faith". How would you feel if Jesus were amazed at your faith? You see it wasn't that the centurion asks Jesus some intriguing question to show his faith. It wasn't that the Jesus was impressed with the centurion's position in the Roman army. The centurion showed his faith by recognizing that just the words that Jesus speaks can heal a man. And his faith is revealed by the fact that the man does not even feel worthy to have Jesus enter his house.

When Jesus comments on his faith in verse 9 by saying, "I tell you the truth I have not found such great faith even in Israel", he says this toward the crowd. So he wants people who witness this event to learn from this. Today as we read of it and believe it happened, we need to learn that what amazes or impresses Jesus is that we are humble in our spirit and we know that he is able to do more than we can imagine.

Lessons from Cattle


When I was a teenager, I worked on a farm. And you are probably saying "yes, Beau we already know that"! But do you know that I also drove tractors. Okay, yes you probably know that too! But I don't think you have heard this story.

I think I was a junior in high school. I was working real late one evening during harvest season. Harvest is when all the corn, milo, or cotton is ready to be picked from the plant and put into storage for later use. But we did not pick the ears of corn or the cotton. There are big tractors that do that for us now. But I remember driving one of these big trators (AKA combines) and looking out into a neighboring field and seeing a lone calf who was wandering around along the edge of a group of trees. This calf probably was about 2 weeks old (his walk was still a little wobbly). I drove by this calf seeing it crying out for his mother. But there was no cow in sight. So I kept on driving not thinking about anything. And I got probably about a mile from the calf when I saw three coyotes running along the fence line. These coyotes were running in the opposite direction of where I was going, toward the calf. So I begin to panic a little because this calf is left defenseless and weak in the middle of the field. So I tell my other co-workers that I am going to hop the fence and scare of the coyotes, so the calf is not an evening meal. So I turn around and begin to go in the highest gear to the location where I remember the calf being. But when I get there the calf is gone and the coyotes are also out of sight.

I was stumped. I could not find the calf or coyotes anywhere. So I begin to wonder. Did the coyotes attack the calf and take it away? Did the calf run off and escape? I stay there a couple of minutes looking around trying to see anything. As I begin to drive off, I see out of my periphery three coyotes running as fast as could to the place I saw the come from. And they are running from two cows who are chasing with their heads down looking to knock them over. As I am watching this event take place I find myself cheering in the cab of tractor. And cheering outloud for the cows to catch them.

So as the the cows are chasing the coyotes away, I begin to see the calf a little ways back by itself again still crying out. And finally, here comes the mama cow. Then the calf begins to drink some milk from his mother. And then the other two cows return, not even to even sniff the calf to see if it was okay. They had done their job. They had run off any tresspassor who even came close to taking anything.

WOW!! You talk about having the mama's back and protecting another's baby, or protecting it's hide. It was awesome to watch that take place. Animals of the bovine nature (cattle) have that instict to automatically look out for others in their herd. Do we have that as children of God? Should we look out for others when they are in dire need of help? Do we look out for others whether they are a Christian or not? Do we look out for others when they have talked about us behind our back? Do we look out for the one who is homeless and doesn't know when their next meal will be? We should! Psalm 41:1 says "Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the LORD delivers him in times of trouble." So not only should we help those who are weak, but we should also look upon them with respect.

So when the coyotes come around to take the weak and defenseless, what are you going to do?

Cactus Thorn


Over the Christmas holidays I was able to do something I hadn't done in quite a while. When I lived back in Abilene, Erica and I would travel to her parents house (Stephenville) and visit for the weekend. Usually on Sunday we would go worship with her church in the morning, eat lunch, and then play an all out game of paintball war. I have played paintball since I moved to Alvin, but not like this.
We would go out to my in-laws and with about 10-15 guys, go and get bruised and bloody. Yes sometimes getting shot would draw blood! The fields we played in were great. Their land had a creek running through it with all kinds of trees and big rocks. It has great places to hide and ambush. So when we visited for this past Christmas we played paintball, the rough and tough way. When we were done, we showed our bruises, cut, and scrapes. On my right arm I had a big spot of cactus thorns. If anyone has come in contact with a cactus you know what I mean. Usually when you think of a cactus thorn, you think of a single long thorn that looks like a needle. Well, all cactuses have those, but they also have small ones that accompany them. So I pull out a cactus thorn, only to find more. And when I say more I mean probably 50 small ones. And what is troubling about them is you really cannot see them unless you have a bright light and a pair of tweezers. Anyway, I do my best to get them all out, but I have one spot on my wrist that keeps bothering me. I cannot find anything anywhere. So I just leave it alone, thinking it will eventually come out.
About a week and half pass and this spot on my arm is still itching. I keep scratching and look at it under a magnifying glass only to find nothing. Well about a week ago, I begin to squeeze on the now wound. It is gross because it got infected and all kinds of stuff is coming out. So as I am squeezing, out pops a cactus thorn about an inch long. I was totally surprised! But it only made sense that all that itching was because I had a thorn in my arm.
Well immediately after I thought about Paul's "thorn in the flesh". In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul talks about his "thorn". He said that he was "given" this thorn to keep him from being conceited. No one really knows what the thorn represents. Some people think it is a temptation that he struggled with. Some think it to be an actual physical ailment. Before he wrote the letter, he received a revelation or vision from God. And this "thorn" also called a "messenger of Satan" was to humble him. It was given to him to keep from thinking too highly of himself because of his spiritual gift (the vision).
You probably know someone who thinks highly of themself. You think they look down on other people because of gifts or abilities they have. But what about you. Do you think you are better than others? Do you think that your gifts or abilities are superior to others? God says in Galatians 3:28, "there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Our relationship with God is what matters the most. He does not favor one because they may be the best in reciting the periodic table. He does not favor me over you because I can yodel better. We are all one. That is how we need to look at each other. In God's eyes if we have clothed ourselves with Christ we are one. We are all equal. Maybe if you think you are better than others, because of your gifts or abilities, then do you think God will give you a thorn in your flesh to keep you from being conceited?
